Extra Credit: Journal Article Review
The purpose of this assignment is to give you some exposure to primary sources in personality. To
do this, you will read and review an article from one of the major scholarly journals in personality
For this assignment you must first choose a journal article to read and review. In general, the only
acceptable journals for this assignment are: Journal of Personality and Social Psychology,
Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Journal of Research in Personality, Journal of
Personality. However, if there is an article in a journal other than these that you would like to
review, see me and I may approve it (based on whether it is comparable in complexity to articles
published in the journals listed above). Note also that the article must have been published during
the past 10 years. Spend some time looking through these journals so that you can find an article
that is interesting to you and which you will be able to read and review. Many of the articles in
these journals are very difficult to comprehend and so it pays to spend some time looking and to
choose wisely. After carefully reading the article, write your report. Please make sure that your
report is written in your own words. Do not copy from the article that you review, unless you put
the copied material in quotation marks. Address each of the following questions in your report (if
your article has multiple experiments, you must review all of them).
1. What information was already known about this topic, and how was this study supposed to add
to this knowledge? (The relevant material will be in the Introduction)
2. Give a general description of the methodology
3. What were the major results and were they consistent with the hypotheses?
4. What were the implications of the results, especially in terms of the purpose of the research?
(This will be found in the Discussion section).
This paper can be worth up to a total of 10 extra credit points. The paper must be typed, and a xeroxed copy of the
article must be submitted with your review.
Your report will be evaluated on the extent to which you are able to articulate your comprehension
of the research. Note that the complexity of the article is taken into account; I expect more from a
simple article than from a difficult one.
